Muffins are the new number bun.
Buying trends have seen CD singles and 35mm camera film drop out of the list used to calculate the Retail Price Index but muffins and smoothies are in thanks to the rise of café culture.
The Office of National Statistics said the muffin category also represented the kind of croissants and cakes typically bought with a coffee at UK cafés. Almost a third of UK consumers now regularly visit one of the main coffee chains with 14% visiting independent cafés. Most are meeting friends or after an on-the-go energy boost.
Fairtrade.
Retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Co-Op switched all their coffee and tea products to Fairtrade with this indicating the significance that increasing numbers of consumers are placing on ethical and sustainable issues when they do their grocery shopping.
Coffee Indie-style.
Delocator, the US website for independent cafés, has launched a UK version. www.delocator.org.uk. Pop in your postcode and the site provides a guide to your nearest independent outlets. With tough competition from the ubiquitous big brands, independents are pushing “proper” coffee-making and personal service as well as upping the quality stakes on accompaniments like plump flaky golden croissants and guilty-pleasure chocolate muffins.
Wake up smell the coffee.
The aroma, as well as the taste, of warm bread can have an amazing effect on sales and Starbucks is looking to do the same thing with coffee. Starbucks is ditching flavour-locked bags of pre-ground coffee in US outlets and switching to bean grinding in store to bring back the coffee aroma that was lost when the sealed bags were introduced. Starbucks now has more outlets in London than Manhattan – a twist on the fact that coffee became the official drink of the American colonies during the independence struggle as a protest at high taxes on tea imposed by Britain.
Satisfying to look at, even more satisfying to eat, these extremely versatile rolls are ideal...
